THE story of the international fight against fascism in Spain will be told through song, narrative and poetry at two special shows.

No Pasaran! will be performed at the Museum in the Park this week, as part of this year's celebration of Laurie Lee's birth, and to mark the 75th anniversary of the end of the Spanish civil war.

Written by Stuart Butler, with original songs written by Danny McCue, this production is an updated version of an original piece performed in 1997 by Stroud Football Poets.

The Spanish Civil War was fought from July 17, 1936 to April 1, 1939, between the Republicans, who were loyal to the democratically elected Spanish Republic, and the Nationalists, a rebel group led by General Francisco Franco, aided by Hitler and Mussolini.

Many non-Spaniards joined the International Brigades, knowing that the Spanish Republic was a front line in the war against fascism.

Between 1936 and 1939 over 35,000 men and women, from over 50 countries, left their homes to volunteer for the Republican forces.

Many from Gloucestershire answered that call, including Laurie Lee.

Performances of No Parasan - featuring the Stroud Football Poets, Souled and Healed, Keith Patterson and Kostka Garcia - take place at the Museum in the Park on Friday at 8pm, and on Saturday at 2.30pm.

Tickets are available from the Museum in the Park (www.museuminthepark.org.uk).

No Parasan! is being recorded, produced and engineered at DB Studios, Folly Lane, Stroud by Andrew Butler. CDs will be available after the performance.
