STROUD District Council is offering interest free loans for up to £15,000 for homeowners to improve their properties.
Cllr Chris Brine, chair of SDC’s community services and licensing committee, said: "The days when councils gave out grants have long gone but these interest free loans are a good way for homeowners whose properties need improvements such as some new windows, a new boiler, solid wall insulation or even a new staircase.
"We want to help bring them up to scratch and make them safer and more comfortable."
The Healthy Homes Loan is aimed at owner occupiers whose properties have serious problems such as persistent condensation or damp problems, structural problems, safety issues or are difficult to keep warm.
“Poor housing conditions can have a detrimental impact on people’s health and wellbeing," added Cllr Brine. "Older householders in older properties are particularly vulnerable as they are likely to spend more time at home, however young children are also at risk of developing asthma if they live in a damp home.
"We hope that these loans will help improve poor housing conditions and reduce these risks and would encourage people to apply.”
