PET owners are being advised on how to minimise stress for animals over the firework period.

From Bonfire Night to New Year celebrations, every year thousands of animals suffer as a result of fireworks.

Here are a few words of advice to animal owners from the Cotswolds Dogs and Cats Home about keeping your animals safe.

-If you own fearful animals, look out for advertising of firework events and get yourself prepared.

-Ignore fearful behaviour, as soothing can give animals the impression something is wrong.

-Exercise your dog before dusk ensuring they are wearing a collar and lead at all times.

-Keep your dogs and cats inside when fireworks are around and try and stay at home with them so they are not alone.

-Turn up the radio or television to minimise the impact of noises from outside.

-Do not forget small pets like rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, mice, rats and hamsters. If your small pets live outside move them indoors and give them lots of extra bedding so they have something to burrow in and feel safe.

-A good way to celebrate Bonfire Night is to go to a large organised display; this will reduce the number of fireworks being let off in the area.
