CONCERNS have been raised over congestion on a Cirencester road after a new Aldi supermarket opened.
Motorists have noticed that Cricklade Road, leading to Aldi and Tesco Express, has become more congested since the opening of the new budget store.
When planning permission for the shop was granted in March this year, Cirencester town councillor Jenny Hincks said she was unsure how the store would cope during busy periods with a car park that only had enough space for 77 vehicles.
When contacted by the Standard, Aldi was not available to comment on the congestion outside the store.
Development area manager at Gloucestershire County Council, Neil Troughton, said that when new shops opened they often experienced an initial high demand, with traffic congestion a result.
“We are aware of people’s concerns and we are willing to work with Aldi and Tesco to manage their traffic on Cricklade Road, including how and when deliveries are made,” he said.
He added: “We have also set up a travel plan to help reduce the number of trips to the site by staff.”
