CATTLE will be grazing more safely on Minchinhampton and Rodborough Commons once new cattle grids to prevent them straying are installed.

The National Trust, which has managed the commons for over 100 years, is spending more than £117,000 on the grids, with work planned to start early in 2015.

After 10 years of consultation, the Trust has received a grant of £75,000 from the SITA Trust through its Landfill Communities Fund.

Additional support has come from Natural England.

The aim is to improve safety for both the cattle and for drivers.

Currently 500 cattle graze the 350 hectares of grassland.

Six of the roads across the commons have no barriers and cattle which do stray pose a serious threat on the busier roads around the area.

Every year in May, cattle are turned out to graze the commons over the summer period.
