FRESH calls have been made to reduce the speed limit on a stretch of road in the Cotswold Water Park, with the inquest of a man killed in a crash set to take place.

Father-of-three Robert Hoy was killed on June 25 when his car was in a head-on crash with another vehicle as he was turning into Waterland Outdoor Pursuits in Spratsgate Lane, where he was a sailing instructor.

Since then, Waterland and the Standard have been calling for the speed limit on the stretch of road near the centre to be reduced from 60mph to 30mph.

Waterland staff believe there could be more fatal accidents on the stretch of road unless the limit is reduced.

But Gloucestershire County Council, which is responsible for the road, has refused to consider changing the limit until after an inquest into Mr Hoy's death, when it will likely be determined whether or not speed played a significant part in his death.

A date for the inquest has been set for December 6 at Salisbury Coroner's Court, with that venue chosen because 64-year-old Mr Hoy lived in nearby Melksham.

Pete Pendlebury, health and safety inspector at Waterland ,said the centre would put further pressure on the county council if it does not reduce the speed limit after the inquest.

He said: “What we want to do is stop further accidents happening. If I have to embarrass them then so be it.”

Waterland is considering setting up a petition asking for the speed limit to be reduced if the council does not change it after the inquest.

So far, the campaign to reduce the speed limit has received support from hundreds of Water Park residents and the Cotswold MP Geoffrey Clifton-Brown.
