A STREET trading policy which could allow town and parish councils to sub let pitches at markets could become a reality.

Although, street trading is currently allowed across the district, there is no policy for it.

The policy, which sets out to provides guidelines relating to public safety, public order and preventing nuisance and annoyance was discussed at the district councils Licensing Committee meeting last week.

Following a request from Stow-on-the-Wold and Tetbury town council, councillors voted to recommend that sub letting to town and parish councils is included in the policy.

Stephen Hirst, of Tetbury Town Council said at the meeting: “We wish to continue to run markets, we wish to buy a block and sub let the stalls to maintain town centre vitality. This is really important and vital to this application.

He also explained how the district council had previously granted a street trading license for a man to have a mobile joke shop in a market in the town.

He said it was inappropriate to permit him a license as this stall it was not in keeping with the rest of the market and subletting would ensure that the town council can event situations like this happening again.

The street trading policy will be considered for approval at the full district council meeting on Tuesday, December 16.
