A ROAD Safety Operation will take place tomorrow, Saturday, in Gloucester as part of the county’s Drink Drive Campaign.

National road deaths due to drink driving fell to 230 in 2012, compared to 1,640 fatalities 50 years ago, but death and serious injury on our roads remains a significant challenge for communities.

Members of the Special Constabulary will be running the operation between 10am and 3pm at the St Oswald’s Retail Park in Gloucester as part of the Special Constabulary’s prize-winning Wheeled Respect initiative.

The Operation is being run to support the Gloucester Neighbourhood Partnership Policing Team’s (NPT) local community road safety concerns.

It also gives Special Constables a chance to highlight the vital role they play assisting their colleagues deliver a professional and effective service to the communities they serve.

The event will be targeting motoring offences – inlcuing not wearing seatbelts, using mobile phones and speeding - while also promoting the Drink Drive Campaign.

A number of road checks will take place supported by Gloucestershire PCs and Tri-Force, and there will be educational awareness displays inside Tesco and in the PCC Bus outside B&Q.

Parish and District Councillors will be visiting throughout the day, and the Police and Crime Commissioner Martin Surl will also be attending.
