A NURSERY worker from Fairford who performed CPR on a popular local man after he collapsed in the street has received an award for her quick-thinking and life-saving skills.

Beth Davies, 25, was driving home from a first aid course in March this year when she saw former mayor of Fairford Trevor Hing had collapsed in the Market Place.

The 63-year-old had suffered a cardiac arrest and was told that without Beth's quick actions, he might not have survived. Several people came to Mr Hing's aid that day, including community first responder Nigel Le Bond.

Beth, who was due to be married only months after the incident, has now been awarded a Resuscitation Certificate by The Royal Humane Society after being nominated by resident Chris Roberts.

After recovering, Mr Hing attended Beth's wedding in June at St Mary's Church in Fairford, where the pair had an emotional reunion.

He said, after he heard Beth would receive the award: "I am extremely grateful to Beth and all those people who came to my aid. I would encourage everyone to get first-aid training. Beth’s award is richly deserved.”

Unit Leader of the Fairford community first responders David Chapman said he was very pleased that Beth had been recognised with the award.

"In those few golden minutes by giving effective CPR, she sustained Trevor until the arrival of our first responder, Nigel, with the defibrillator," he said. "I know that this award will recognise Beth’s actions, but will also encourage others to learn the basic skills that will save lives."

Beth, who was delighted and surprised to receive the award, said: "I hope this will spur other people on to be trained in CPR to save a life."
