PEOPLE are being encouraged to join in the Christmas Box Appeal, as the county council gets ready to help distribute boxes around Gloucestershire.

The Christmas Box Appeal aims to help local food banks and charities this season by providing food parcels across Gloucestershire.

Village and community agents plus social care teams who are in regular contact with disadvantaged families and older people will help to make sure the boxes get to those who will benefit the most.

Cllr Mark Hawthorne, leader of Gloucestershire County Council, said, “Our village and community agents, our social care teams and our libraries are all playing their part.

"I’d encourage anyone that can spare a few non-perishable food items and a little time to help spread some kindness this Christmas.”

Boxes need to include the following plus an extra Christmas treat, but no alcohol, cigarettes, vouchers or perishable items:

  • 2 x tins of meat
  • Tin of potatoes
  • Tin of sweet corn
  • Packet of bread sauce
  • Jar of cranberry sauce
  • Gravy granules
  • Stuffing
  • Mince pies
  • Packet of custard (or brandy sauce)
  • Tin of fruit
  • Packet of sweet biscuits
  • Box of chocolates
  • Packet of ‘nibbles’ (peanuts or similar)
  • Chocolate log or Christmas cake

Christmas Boxes of food can be dropped off at collection points in local libraries across the county between December 10 and 15. To find a convenient library visit gloucestershire.gov.uk/libraries
