GLOUCESTER Cathedral will be lit up in purple tonight as a campaign to raise awareness of domestic abuse draws to a close.

The Diocese of Gloucester has joined organisations across Gloucestershire to promote healthy relationships and raise awareness of domestic abuse, sexual violence and other related issues across 16 days of action.

Churches were asked to say a prayer during services, which was specially written for those caught up in abusive relationships.

The Chapter at Gloucester Cathedral also agreed to bathe the building in purple light to show its support of the campaign.

The Bishop of Tewkesbury, the Rt Revd Martyn Snow said: “Abusive relationships can be found in every corner of society. For those suffering at the hands of their abuser, there can be a real sense of helplessness and despair.

“Through this campaign my hope is that those who are suffering can be encouraged to seek help and support.

“I’m pleased the Diocese of Gloucester can lend its support to the campaign. Through our networks we can share information and raise awareness of abusive relationships. Through our churches we can offer a warm welcome to anyone with nowhere to turn. Through prayer we can ask God to grant peace to those who are suffering.”

Those supporting the campaign were asked to display a poster or wear a purple ribbon.
