POPULAR Waitrose checkout worker Penny Wager has died suddenly aged just 63.

Penny, who lived in Slad Road with her husband Brian, passed away on Friday, January 2 after suffering a heart attack.

The glamorous mother-of-one and grandmother to four, was well-known at the Stroud store where a book of condolence has been opened in tribute to her.

Speaking about Penny, Brian said: “She was a loving wife, a wonderful grandmother and a marvellous companion.”

Waitrose shopper Jo Fry paid a heartfelt tribute to Penny and said: “Penny was one of life’s diamonds. She made everyone feel special.

“There were often queues which we joined, when other tills were empty, just so we could catch up. “She always remembered the details of our family and us hers.

“She was a classy lady and we will miss her.”

Penny, who worked at Waitrose for more than 18 years, is survived by daughter Ellie and grandchildren Sophie, 10, Ben, six, Thomas, two, and Ruby, five months.

“She loved all of her grandchildren and was grandma to them all,” added Brian.

The funeral service will take place at Gloucester Crematorium at 10.30am on Tuesday, January 20 where flowers are welcome.

Donations in memory of Penny may be given to Winston's Wish, a childhood bereavement charity.
