FORMER Doctor Who writers Caroline Symcox and Paul Cornell are loving life in Fairford since moving here for her to become the town's vicar.

The married couple, who have between them written Doctor Who TV and radio episodes and novels, moved to Fairford with their two-year-old son Tom in November.

Caroline, 34, and Paul, 47, met at a Doctor Who writer's party in 1998, and the programme's creative force, Steven Moffat, was best man at their wedding in 2002.

Paul wrote one TV episode during Christopher Ecclestone's stint as the Doctor and two for David Tennant, as well as novels, while Caroline penned two radio shows about the Time Lord, with Peter Davison in the main role.

Caroline, who was president of the Doctor Who Society at Oxford University, said: "Writing plays was kind of in my spare time while I was a student, but when I met Paul he suggested I bite the bullet and try writing professionally.

"Then it all just came together. I’d love to write more but it’s all about finding the time.

“Paul has written for Doctor Who more recently than I have. He still has an owned character and they use her in several audio plays and books. She’s called Bernice Summerfield."

They previously lived in Amersham, where Caroline was a curate for three years, and have quickly fallen in love with Fairford while continuing to write.

Caroline has just written a book titled The Vicar’s FAQ, which has received praise, while Paul's latest novel, The Severed Streets, has been equally well-received.

But she is happiest being a vicar and said Fairford has a fantastic community around the church, St Mary's.

“My first Sunday service was the Remembrance service and in Fairford it’s huge," she said.

"In Amersham the number gathered around the war memorial is around 10 for Armistice day, but in Fairford, a town a third of the size, we had more than 100.”

Paul, a full-time writer, is equally happy in Fairford and has already set up a monthly quiz night at the The Railway Inn.

When asked what he loves most about Fairford so far, Paul replied: “The brownies at 7A Coffee Shop. The Plough pub is also great and the nursery, Flying Start, where Tom goes, is incredible.

"Also the huge playground in the town is immense.”

Both Paul and Caroline have a strong Twitter following and encourage residents to join them and interact.
