SHOPKEEPERS in the Five Valleys are being urged to enter a competition which could lead to them being recognised nationally and receiving an invite to a reception in Parliament.

The Best Small Shops Competition is designed to bring small retailers to the attention of parliamentarians and the local community.

Stroud MP Neil Carmichael said: “This is a great opportunity for small shops in to get recognition for the brilliant work they do supporting the community and creating jobs all year round.”

Simon Danczuk, chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Small Shops Group, said: “I want to celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit that is so typical of small shops in the UK.

“Having set up a shop myself in Rochdale, I know how much effort and determination it takes to make a go of it and how rewarding it is when your idea takes shape in front of you.

“It takes courage and resilience to go into retail and I think it is important that politicians recognise and reward this.”

Small shop owners can submit an application to the competition via bestsmallshops.uk by Friday, January 30.

The best small shop will be selected based upon a number of criteria, including innovation within the business, engagement with the community and entrepreneurial activities.

All shortlisted candidates will be invited to a parliamentary reception, where the winner is due to be announced on Wednesday, February 25.
