FAMOUS artist, Sir Stanley Spencer R.A will be the topic of conversation at tonight’s Stonehouse History Group meeting.

Peter Hill, a former BBC correspondent, will visit the group in Stonehouse Town Hall on Wednesday, February 11 at 7.30pm to discuss Stanley Spencer in Leonard Stanley and Stonehouse.

Mr Hill will talk about his experiences interviewing residents of Leonard Stanley who remember the artist's time in their village.

In the 1940s Mr Spencer lived in Leonard Stanley for nearly two years at the beginning of the last war and made many paintings of local scenes, as well as finishing off pictures of work in the Glasgow shipyards.

Art historian, Mr Hill interviewed many people in Leonard Stanley who remembered Spencer being there when they were children and taped their reminiscences. His talk will recall those memories and describe Stanley Spencer’s life and work at that time.
