WHICH bird should be chosen as the National Bird of Britain? One staff member at a Cotswold school appeared on BBC One to gives his views.

Admin support worker at The Cotswold School in Bourton-on-the-Water Jon Hunt was asked to appear on television after he posted a picture on social media of a very tame robin perching on his finger, that apparently follows him all around his garden.

People across the UK have been invited to choose what feathered creature will be the National Bird of Britain, and the results will be announced on the day of the General Election - May 7.

The 10 contenders include the robin, barn owl, mute swan, and blue tit. Other countries already have a national bird, with the golden eagle representing American and the Gallic Rooster for France.

Jon Hunt said he did not think anything of it when he posted a picture of him holding the robin, which he has named Robyn, but was quickly contacted by BBC news presenter Jon Kay to star in a piece about the bird of Britain vote.

"I had sent in a picture to the BBC Radio Gloucestershire's Twitter page of me and the robin on my hand which I have in the garden at home," said Jon. "A very friendly creature and one which will follow me everywhere in the garden.

"Not thinking anything more of it, during work on Monday Jon Kay contacted me via Twitter wanting to meet up and discuss why I think the robin should be Bird of Britain."

Jon spent five minutes talking to the BBC presenter and the camera crew about why he believed the robin should win the title.

"The red breast is a unique feature of the robin which also shows its red fiery side - it being very territorial," he said. "It will fight with other robins in their space to always be top-bird."

"It's not everyday you get wild birds sitting on your finger, but I felt privileged that Robyn the Robin is able to do so."
