A PARISH in Wiltshire has received £92,000 for repairs to its Grade II listed church’s roof.

The church at Alderton is dedicated to St Giles, an 18th century Abbot and the church itself dates back to either the 11th or the 12th century.

The church’s treasurer Bronwen O’Byrne explained that the money was very welcome.

She said: “The bid was for work that we knew we needed to do on the roof. For the very small community that we are this sort of money is pretty difficult to find.

“One part of the roof is starting to leak and we have had a couple of events where we’ve needed to put buckets underneath the leaks.

“It’s a very old, very beautiful historical church. It’s a huge amount of money for a pretty huge job.”

The grant to St Giles is one of 502 from a total funding package of £30million that was announced for urgent roof repairs for places of worship by the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
