DENIS Love, who captured a gold medal in the Scottish rink at the Commonwealth Games in Auckland back in 1990, saw his hopes of recapturing lost glories end at the final stage of the Ayr Open singles tournament at Northfield on Saturday when he lost out 21-16 to Ayr's Brian Fulton.
The match revolved around a scoring spree between the fourth and seventh ends. Fulton, leading 3-2 picked up a 4, immediately dropped a similar count, but then added another 4 and 3 to lead 14-6 after just seven ends. Three ends later Fulton had increased his advantage to 17-7, but then Love countered with nine shots over the next five ends to be just one down.
However the fightback ended on the sixteenth end when Fulton picked up three shots and a single on the next wrapped his victory.
The pairs title went to Alex Fleming and Hugh McGinn from Drongan who beat Coylton's Jim Hunter and Ian McNeillie 17-9 thanks mainly to a timely count of 6 on the eleventh end that pushed the Drongan pair ahead 15-6.
The women's singles went to Stranraer's Kathleen Stevenson who counted eight shots over the last five ends to beat Anne Hainey from Forehill 21-13.
Forehill did have the consolation of the pairs when Rona Davidson and Sandra Sadler beat Cumnock's mother and daughter duo Jean and Fiona Sykes 17-7.

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
