A man was left with serious facial injuries after being attacked by a gang of youths when he stopped his car at traffic lights.

The 23-year-old was driving along Saughtonhall Avenue, Edinburgh, with his wife and her parents in the early hours of Sunday when five teenage boys started kicking and punching the car.

The victim got out of his car and confronted the youths, but was then set upon. The attack left him with a fractured eye socket and other facial injuries.

All five attackers were slim and around 14 to 18, dressed in dark coloured clothing, and one had blond, spikey hair.

A police spokeswoman said: "This type of incident is extremely rare and we are appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time and who may have witnessed this assault to get in touch with the police."
