DRAFT regulations, which will introduce new European Community rules

on the manufacture and marketing of meat products, have been issued for

consultation by the UK agriculture and health departments.

The regulations will apply within the single European market from

January 1, 1993. However, those affected will have until January 1,

1996, to reach the standard required for approval by their local

authority or, in some cases, the Agricultural Departments. The proposals

do not apply to retail premises such as butchers' shops.

Scottish Office Agriculture Minister Sir Hector Monro said the meat

industry in Scotland was already able to capitalise on the Scottish

product's world-wide reputation for quality.

''Common hygiene standards, and the abolition of border controls which

will follow, will provide an excellent opportunity to exploit further

export opportunities,'' he added.

''Of course, the consumer at home also expects high standards and,

with farm assured schemes on the increase, these regulations will help

secure the confidence of this major market.''
