November 6.

To me the most informative part of the Panorama portrait of John Major

came in the final seconds which showed him preparing to relax in his den

by dropping a compact disc into his up-market Danish hi-fi.

How ironic in the circumstances that it should be Danish, and made no

less so by the fact that his own constituency of Huntingdon houses the

equally prestigious British equivalent.

Both these Danish and British rivals export widely throughout the

world to people with above-average incomes. Both products are

beautifully designed, although many in the know maintain that the

British is more technically innovative and enjoys a somewhat superior

sound quality.

So what exactly did the Prime Minister mean when he ended his

conference speech with the vow to ''support Britain first, last, and

always''?
