A BABY boy was the sole survivor of a two-car crash on the A9

yesterday which killed a young couple believed to be his parents and

another motorist.

The accident happened just before 11.25am amid roadworks at Blackford,

north of Dunblane. A spokesman for Tayside Fire Brigade said it was the

worst crash he had seen in the area.

Fire crews had to cut the victims from the wreckage and a doctor

prounouced them dead.

The couple, who have not been named, were thought to have been

travelling south in a Ford Orion with the baby in the back of the car

when they collided with a northbound BMW just inside a contraflow lane.

The driver of the BMW, an elderly man, was also killed.

The baby was pulled injured from the wreckage of the Orion and taken

by ambulance to Perth Royal Infirmary. A hospital spokeswoman said last

night that his condition was satisfactory.

Tayside Police, who are trying to establish the cause of the crash,

said the names of the dead were being withheld until relatives had been

informed.

The Fire Brigade spokesman said there had been a number of accidents

in the area but none as serious as yesterday's.

''We've been out to that part a few times, but they have been shunts

from behind, nobody has been trapped,'' he said.

The roadworks have been in place for some time to widen the road to a

dual carriageway.
