THE new sheriff at Stornoway, Sheriff Ian Cameron, missed his first

day on the Bench yesterday.

Sheriff Cameron, who succeeds Sheriff Donald Booker-Millburn, was

unable to travel to Stornoway because of a back problem.

His two predecessors at the court -- Sheriff William Fulton and

Sheriff Donald Booker-Millburn -- also suffered from back problems

during their term of office at Stornoway.

Also at Stornoway yesterday, 34-year-old Mr Brian Stewart became the

youngest chief executive of a local authority in Scotland when he took

over as head of the Western Isles Council.

A first class honours graduate of Edinburgh University, he had local

government experience in England before becoming director of

administration with Ross and Cromarty District Council five years ago.

Following a meeting with his management team yesterday morning he then

had a scheduled meeting with Western Isles Enterprise in the afternoon.

Mr Iain Maciver, the new factor of the publicly-owned Stornoway Trust

Estate, also began work with the trust yesterday but will not take over

the post on May 1.

Mr Maciver, the current president of the Scottish Crofters' Union,

will take over from Mr Donald M. Smith who retires at the end of April

after 32 years as factor.
