MARTYN Woodroffe, a silver medallist at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico,

has been appointed as the new Director of Scottish Swimming and will

take up the post on June 1.

The Welshman, who also won a hat trick of medals at the 1970

Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, takes up the appointment at a time when

the Scottish Amateur Swimming Association has put together a number of

new ideas that will, hopefully, boost the sport's fortunes in the move

towards the new century.

Woodroffe, who fills the vacuum left by the departure 15 months ago of

previous director Hammy Smith, said: ''I am looking forward to taking up

the appointment and working towards achieving the goals set out by the

new development plan.''

For the past few years, Woodroffe has acheived success as swimming

development officer for Warrington Borough Council and chief coach with

Warrington Warriors. He steered Helen Slatter to a second Olympic

appearance in Barcelona two years ago, and is also coach to Scottish

internationalist Alison Mackay.

A butterfly specialist, 18-year-old Mackay is a member of the

Commonwealth Games squad and represented Scotland in the World Cup in

Germany 10 days ago.

For Woodroffe, who will be with the Warrington squad at this week's

Edinburgh International meet at the Commonwealth Pool, the taking up of

the appointment will coincide with the Scottish championships, the final

selection event for this summer's Commonwealth Games in Canada.

* JONATHAN Kerr and Rik Leishman have signalled their Commonwealth

Games intentions by winning All-America honours at the prestigious

National Collegiate Championships in Minneapolis. Kerr, from Edinburgh,

clocked a personal best of 3min 50.69sec in the final of the 400 yards

individual medley, while Leishman, the 1992 Olympian, reached the final

of the 100 yards butterfly.

Both Scots will return from the States in May with the aim of

clinching their Games selection at the Scottish championships at the

Commonwealth Pool in June.

Kerr competed in the 1990 Games, but has been troubled by injuries in

recent seasons, while Leishman is also on his way back after having

struggled with a shoulder problem.
