RANGERS' #4m attacker, Duncan Ferguson, may have anticipated a rather

more glamorous debut for his new club, but his first appearance in front

of a few ground staff and empty terracings at Love Street yesterday

could be just as significant in the long run as an opening show at a

packed Ibrox.

The former Dundee United striker was forced by injury to wait on the

sidelines as Rangers began the season, but his hamstring problem has

been cleared up and he played for 55 minutes in the closed doors game

against St Mirren, which Rangers won 2-0.

Manager Walter Smith will assess how Ferguson reacts before

considering him for the Old Firm game on Saturday. Davie McPherson, who

has also been absent since the start of the season, played a few minutes

longer.

Smith said: ''I'm delighted that Duncan has a game under his belt. I

have always said that was my only concern about him. There doesn't seem

to have been any reaction to his problem, but we will see in the

morning.

''Dave McPherson also came through without a problem. It's now just a

case of both getting games.''

Mikhailichenko opened the scoring in 26 minutes against a young Saints

side, and Paterson notched the second nine minutes from time.
