MORE than £1,200 has been collected for a Cirencester grandfather in only two days - as locals teamed up to raise enough money for him to replace his stolen trailer.

Tony Curry, from Cirencester, has been voluntarily mowing the grass on the town's roundabouts for three years.

Yet on Easter Saturday, he was left devastated after his £1,200 trailer was stolen almost from under his nose while he was mowing the roundabout next to Cirencester fire station.

The 70-year-old former councillor receives no money or expenses towards his work, despite going out once a week in the summer.

After his trailer was stolen, he was overwhelmed to hear everyone in the town wanted to raise money for him to buy a new one - but he felt he just could not ask for help.

Now, the people of Cirencester and the Cotswolds have raised more than the cost of the trailer in just a weekend.

Suzannah Harvey from Cotswold Aiport donated £453 writing: "The world needs more people like Tony Curry! Happy mowing and if you've got time, I've got 400 odd acres that need trimming! From us all at Cotswold Airport."

Deputy mayor of Cirencester Mark Harris donated £50 and said: "Tony - I know we are standing against each other in the election, but there are times when we need to pull together, this is one them."

And other residents and businesses donated sums from £5 and up - all praising the work Mr Curry carries out.

Snips 'N' Styles from Bourton on the Water gave £10 and said: "It's only a small amount, but I hope it helps xxx"

The Standard will be approaching Mr Curry tomorrow (Monday) for a comment and to arrange how he would like the money presented.
