STROUD Rotarian club’s oldest member has been awarded a world honour after 47 years of selfless service.

Graham Furley, 93, was presented with the Service Above Self award by Rotary District Governor Martyn Harwood at the District 1100 Mini-Convention on Monday, March 2.

The award is made for outstanding service to the community and Rotary,.

It is the highest recognition that a club can give and only around 150 people receive the award worldwide each year.

Mr Furley became a Stroud Rotarian 47 years ago and despite working full time in his own business, Lansdown Motors, he immediately threw himself into the Rotary motto of Service above Self.

In 2012 he was also awarded the British Empire Medal for his community work.

The honour took him by surprise as he says he has never sought recognition for his efforts.

During the presentation Martyn Harwood paid tribute to Graham’s commitment and he commended Mr Furley’s many years of fantastic service to the community.
