TRIBUTES have been paid to a ‘wonderful, loving and humorous’ grandfather who died while riding his classic scooter.

Vince Lane, a lifelong lover of scooters and motorbikes, suffered a heart attack while riding a Lambretta near his home in Leonard Stanley.

Friends from scooter group the Stroud Collective, of which Mr Lane was a member, formed an escort of classic bikes at his funeral yesterday.

They rode with the hearse to the service for the 60-year-old at St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Stonehouse.

Born in Tredworth, Mr Lane attended Beeches Green School in Quedgeley and St Peters High School in Gloucester.

He lived at Ebley, Tuffley, Frocester and most recently Leonard Stanley.

He developed a passion for cars, bikes and engines as a young boy and bought his first scooter at the age of 16.

Mr Lane, who died on March 21, was a well-known member of the scooter club, which meets at the Queen Victoria pub once a month.

His daughter, Carly, 30, said: “Dad was so well known in the community and was well-loved by everyone who met him. He was wonderful, loving and humorous."

She added: “It was always his dream to own a proper motorcycle. He recently bought a Suzuki motorbike but sadly he didn’t get to live out his dream.”

Mr Lane enjoyed his chosen trade as an engineer and worked at Elite Extrusion Die Ltd in Brockworth.

As a keen sportsman, he featured for a number of teams over the years. He played football for Tuffley Rovers, rugby for Painswick RFC and cricket for Frocester.

A lover of the outdoors, he enjoyed fly fishing and clay pigeon shooting.

He married his wife Janet in 1976 with whom he had one daughter, Carly.

Mr Lane was thrilled when he became a grandfather last year after the arrival of Roman and was delighted to be the first person to make the tot laugh.

Described by his family as ‘a Gloucestershire man through and through’ he had lived in Ebley, Tuffley, Frocester and most recently Leonard Stanley, where he lived with partner Sue Godsell.

Mrs Godsell said: “Vince was a kind, caring and understanding step-father to Ellen, Joanne and Lorna and a kind-hearted step-grampy to Tom, Ted, Emma, Lucy and Belle.”
