FIVE men have been held on suspicion of attempted murder after a man was assaulted in Cheltenham.

Police are appealing for information to the incident which happened at around 12.40am on Sunday, April 19, near to The Range store on Tewkesbury Road.

A group of men and women were walking along Tewkesbury Road when they were approached by a group of men.

An altercation broke out and one of the first group, a 27-year-old man, was assaulted.

When he fell to the ground the assault continued.

The victim was taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital before being transferred to Southmead Hospital in Bristol with serious head injuries.

The injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

A 21-year-old man, 20-year-old man, a 19-year-old man and two 17-year-old boys, all from Cheltenham, have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and are currently in police custody.
