THE newly-formed Cirencester ABC were put firmly on the map when they proved the only club to register a full house of winners at a recent show in Bristol hosted by Sweatbox ABC.

The winning trio were Johnny Varey, Thomas Varey and Dave Davis.

First on for Cirencester was 12-year-old Johnny boxing at 37kg against Downend's Sonny Tucker.

Varey boxed very well landing two- and three-punch combinations in what proved an excellent schoolboy bout, with the Cirencester youngster winning a unanimous points decision.

Thomas stepped in the ring to face Bailey Hannis from The Factory ABC in Gloucester.

From the bell Hannis was looking to land big punches but Varey's clever footwork kept him out of range while he able to land scoring shots of his own, which led to another unanimous points decision.

Completing the treble for Ciren was Dave Davis in the 57kg category against Horseshoe ABC's Cameron Lampard.

In an all-action bout Davis edged the first round with the cleaner punches while Lampard battled back gamely to catch his rival with straight punches.

The third round saw Davis land left hands to the body which resulted in Lampard taking a standing eight count. Both boys gave 100 percent in what was a highly entertaining bout with Davis winning on a unanimous points decision.

Coach Tommy Varey said: "What a brilliant night of boxing, what a good show!

"All of our boys boxed brilliantly and were a credit to our club and our coaches Simon Knowles, Billy Varey and Jamie Davis. We make a good team.’’

CIRENCESTER ABC also took in a show at Exeter where 11-year-old Lewis Varey gained his second win in as many bouts with a unanimous points victory over Wayne Birch from the host club.

Varey really upped his pace from the second round landing a series of point-scoring shots to the head.

Then, in the third round, Varey landed a straight right hand punch which resulted in the Exeter boxer having to take a standing eight count.

Coach Varey said: "Lewis boxed brilliant and totally outclassed the Exeter lad.’’

CIRENCESTER ABC travelled to Devonport in Plymouth last Friday for just one schoolboy bout in which Raymond Jones made his debut for the club against Cody Berry from the host club who had four bouts under his belt.

From the first bell Jones made his mark by boxing well behind a high guard and towards the end of the round Jones caught Berry with cracking combination punches, prompting the corner to retire their lad before the start of the second round.

Coach Simon Knowles said: "It was a long way to travel for one bout but it was worth it.

"I would rather Raymond had boxed the three rounds to gain experience but he just proved too strong for the home boxer."

Cirencester ABC have qualified three of their boxers for the Western Counties finals of the Schoolboy National Championships on May 2 in Bude, Devon.
