DUE to the success of a group camp held for the first time this weekend Crudwell Scouts have decided to make the get together an annual event.

The playing fields behind Crudwell Village Hall played host to the first ever Crudwell group Scout camp over the weekend and saw young people from the Beavers to the Explorers socialising and camping out together.

Children and teenagers aged from six years old to 18 were involved with the camp, trying their hand at archery, building a fire and constructing a huge rope bridge across the field.

The tents used by the Scouts over the weekend were bought thanks to a generous donation from the proceeds of the Malmesbury Carnival.

The Group Scout Leader Helen Bleakley-Roberts said that 46 young people turned up for the camp, making it one of the troop’s biggest events to date.

She said: “I think everybody who went had a fantastic time. The kids had a wonderful time and we had great weather.

“This was the first time we’ve done a group camp like that, for the six year olds to the 18 year olds.

“We were very lucky to get Sport England funding for the archery equipment and very lucky to get some funding for some new tents.

“I would like to thank the hole of the leaders’ team and all of the parents who came to make it such a successful event."

Helen also added that special thanks went to her Explorers, who helped out with every job during the weekend without a single complaint and made the event as fun as possible for the younger years.

She added: “My teenagers are the best thing since sliced bread. They didn’t moan or groan if they got asked to go something, they just do it immediately.

“They are all superb role models to the younger Scouts. If any of them were my young people I would be extremely proud to be their parent.”

The 1st Crudwell Scout Troop is hoping to put on the group camp again next year as well as more events for the Scouts, but needs more adult leaders to help organise and supervise.
