A CHURCH in Stroud is launching a fundraising drive for a new £3.1million building in Cainscross Road.

The Christian Community plans to create a new church and community centre and has already invested £1.4million of savings towards the project, but needs a further £1.7 million before building can start.

Rev Aaron Mirkin, from the church, said: “The current building at the site, built in 1968, is too small and inadequate for our congregation, which has doubled in numbers over the last six years.

“The plan is to knock down the existing building and build a new church and centre which would provide adequate space.

“It would also allow us to open our doors to the wider community. We would have a new kindergarten and conference facilities, and would be able to host other local initiatives from groups who need space for their activities.”

The church received planning permission for the project in November 2013.

Mr Mirkin said: “We hope to start building in 2016, but it depends on whether we have sufficient funds to go ahead.

“We have had some interest from local businesses but we are hoping for more to come on board and help us with our fundraising drive.”

A public consultation was held in April 2013 and some neighbours expressed concern over the height of the proposed building and potential drainage and parking problems.

But Mr Mirkin said the church had sought to address any concerns, and reduced the planned building to two-storeys.

It will also have solar thermal panels and a green sedum roof in places.
