A TEACHER from Westonbirt Prep School near Tetbury has raised £3,278 for the Alzheimer’s Society by running the London Marathon in memory of his grandfather.

Sean Price was inspired to run the marathon by grandfather, Jack Price, who died last year and struggled with Alzheimer’s in his old age.

“My grandfather Jack Price suffered from the disease before passing away last year,” said Sean.

“He was an ex-miner and rugby player and the toughest person I have known. The stories of what he did and experienced in the mines are mind blowing and have always stayed with me-and my classes as I have often shared them.”

He added: “Alzheimer's and dementia can have a huge impact on individuals and families as I have experienced myself.

“The society supports people affected by this and funds research into how else these people can be helped in future.

It was his first marathon and Sean said he could never have achieved it or raised the money he did without the support of Westonbirt staff, pupils and parents.

“The children loved it. They really got behind it and lots watched on TV and tracked me on the day. They also made me cards and banners before the event,” he said.

All the prep children also donned their trainers and ran laps of the field to equal 173.25 miles in a bid to help Sean raise the money.

“Through the pain, the burning quads, the aching feet and the constant mental battle to be able to lift my foot off the ground rather than lie down on the road, the main motivation was the incredible generosity of the friends, families, colleagues, parents, children and even strangers that have pledged their hard earned money to the cause.”
