AN ARMY bomb disposal team removed an old grenade and a mortar shell from a recycling centre in Horsley yesterday.
Police were alerted at 4:35pm to the two items neither of which were live.
They had been left at Pyke Quarry recycling centre in a wooden box.
According to police the pin had been removed from the grenade and the mortar end appeared to be drilled so the army Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit didn’t need to conduct a controlled explosion.
The army EOD cleared the site and locked the gates of the recycling centre while they removed the items.
Police have issued a warning in response to the find. A spokesperson said: “If you discover anything like this you should call the police right away and not touch it.”
