COTSWOLD District should follow South Gloucestershire in scrapping all green bin charges, according to a local man.

The Conservatives have already promised to freeze green bin charges until 2020, but South Cerney man Alan Dickinson believes they should be go further and eliminate charges completely.

South Gloucestershire Council recently voted to scrap their unpopular £36 green bin charge after operational for just one year.

The council will now take on the £2million cost of removing resident’s green waste.

"What is the Conservative policy for charging householders an additional council tax for green waste collection. Is it a postcode tax?” Said Mr Dickinson, who stood as an independent in South Cerney Village Ward in the district council elections.

Cotswolds residents can opt in to using the green bin service.

CDC council leader Lynden Stowe said: “CDC currently charge £30 a year for a green bin and we've promised to freeze that charge until at least 2020.

“The £30 charge covers the cost of providing the service on a weekly basis.

“I do not see why residents who live in flats or do their own home-composting should subsidise the cost of the service for those people with gardens who wish to use the service. So, as far as green bins go, it should be a case that the ‘user-pays’.”
