CARING primary school pupils in Brimscombe raised over £800 in a sponsored silence for victims of Nepal’s earthquake.

After Year 6 pupil Frankie Fry, 11, watched news coverage of the earthquake on April 25, he wrote an email to his headteacher, Karen Riordan, at Brimscombe Primary School asking if they could raise money for the country.

Mrs Riordan said: “When Frankie told the school council his idea they all pounced on it.

“It was just one of those situations where I felt a little bit out of control. The spontaneity really blew all the staff away because the children were just so on board.

“I think that the students have all been quite moved by the news from Nepal.”

The school council is a group made up of two students from each year group who meet once a month with the headteacher with ideas of things they want to do.

On May 6 reception pupils aimed to do an hour of silence but managed more — because they forgot to start talking again!

The older students kept their silence for the entire morning while Year 6 students stayed quiet for the whole day.

The pupils chose to donate their money to ShelterBox “because they felt it would provide long-term relief” explained Mrs Riordan, who said she was “very proud” of them.

They expect to raise £1,000 in total for the charity.
