DRIVERS in Cirencester have been left mystified after warning signs for traffic lights were put up at a busy junction but then no lights were installed.

Work began on improving the London Road roundabout and Burford Road junction in May 2014 and the project was due to be complete in November last year. However it was not fully finished until April this year and the main company in charge, Brittania Construction, came under fire.

Despite workmen packing up and leaving, locals were puzzled about several promised improvements that were still missing from the area near the roundabout.

Bryan Colyer, 85, who lives near the London Road roundabout in the town said he was confused as to where the promised traffic lights were.

"I'm very puzzled," he said. "I just want to know what happened to them, it would be nice to know.

"If you go along the A417 junction, where I live, you can see warning signs for traffic lights but then there are none there."

The plan was to improve the tricky Y-shaped junction by turning it into a T-junction with traffic lights and crossings for pedestrians and cyclists. A dedicated left turn lane was also installed at the Grove Lane roundabout.

Yet the traffic lights have not yet appeared and there is also no pelican or zebra crossing.

Peter Finlayson, project manager for developers Redrow and Robert Hitchins said there had been a bit of delay in installing the traffic lights, due to a fault with an electrical supply.

“We are working with Gloucestershire County Council to bring forward the traffic signal installation as soon as possible,” he said. “We thought it would be last week but it was delayed again. We hope they will be in no later than June 10. A toucan crossing - for pedestrians and cyclists - in Grove Lane will also be installed at the same time."

Mr Colyer, on hearing this news, said he thought that was acceptable.

“As long as they don’t dig up the ground all over again to put down cables,” he said. “I hope it gets done quickly and easily.”
