CHILREN from Minety Pre-School wowed Chelsea Flower Show with a bumper crop of vegetables and flowers and secured a prestigious Silver Gilt award.

Broad beans, carrots and Swiss chard cultivated by children aged four and under were displayed at the world’s most prestigious flower show from May 19 to May 23.

Youngsters at the pre-school began gardening eight years ago and they now have several greenhouses, two garden plots and their produce is on sale at the old village phone box.

Their produce has been selected for the show twice now, resulting in a Silver Medal and Silver Gilt award in previous years.

Registering for consideration for this year’s Chelsea show, they were told they had to grow broad beans, carrots and Swiss chard in three different compost mixtures and then send photos showing the size, colour and leaves on their veg.

Compost company Scotts Miracle-Gro got in touch to tell them they were chosen for the 2015 show and the first thing the children wanted to know was whether the Queen would judge them as she had in previous years.

Stuart Jackson, a helper with the Minety Pre-school, said that the result at was fabulous and he confirmed that the team would be entering their plants again next year.

In 2012 Mr Jackson first heard that the group could apply to the Royal Horticultural Society for free compost if the submitted them for consideration at the Chelsea Flower Show.

“More and more schools are doing it now but we’ve been doing it for nearly 10 years,” said Mr Jackson, “We are very lucky because a lady down the road lets us use her garden and plant it with veg to sell at our phonebox shop.

“For children to grow plants and to get a Silver Gilt is just incredible.”

Plants and veg can be bought from Minety’s Old Phone Box with prices starting at 50p and all proceeds going to Minety Pre-school and Forest school.
