MORE than 400 disabled horse riders will descend on Gloucestershire this weekend for a huge competition.

The Riding for the Disabled National Championships at Hartpury College, starts on Friday, July 17, and continues all weekend.

Riders and carriage drivers, many coming from the Cotswolds, will compete in a range of events including dressage, showjumping and equestrian vaulting.

On Friday, Riding for the Disabled Association president Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal will attend the championships to watch carriage driving and visually impaired dressage competitions.

Championship chairman Anne Coney said: “This wonderful event captures the spirit of the whole organisation.

"We bring together competitors from all over the UK who have overcome sometimes unbelievable challenges to qualify for their place.

"The courage and skill displayed by many of our riders and drivers is truly inspiring and our volunteers work hard throughout the weekend to make sure everyone has a good time.”
