CROWDS flocked to two Wiltshire villages at the weekend to enjoy fun-filled events in the sunshine.

On Saturday, Sherston Boules and Carnival saw 128 teams from around the country take part in the games which sees competitors throwing small metal balls and aiming to land them as close to a wooden “jack” as possible.

And on the same day people basked in the sun while enjoying fruity delights at the Crudwell Strawberry Fayre, held in the grounds of All Saints church.

Cathy Butcher, one of the organisers said the event was very successful and well attended.

“People quite often say to us, we didn’t realise it was on. Because we were on the main road, people can see us quite easily. “ On the same day the North Wilts Flower Club held their annual flower inside All Saints Church.

And Mrs Butcher said that holding the event on the same day as the festival helped draw in the crowds to the strawberry fayre.

She said: “It just tied in so well with the flower show,” she said.

Un Coq et Deux Boules, a Sherston team captained by Paul Kirkham who lives on Sandpits Lane in the village won the Sherston Boules tournament and runners up were ‘Boules Boys’ from Stroud.

The festivities in Sherston continued on Sunday as competitors fought it out in a tug-of-war competition.

Overall winners were the The Vine Tree in Norton near Malmebury who regained the title they lost last year, by beating the Rattlebone Inn.

Organiser James Pyle explained that the tournament had been a great success and that if was only possible because of the hard work of volunteers.

He said: “Thanks to all the villages who came to help, to all the putter uppers and the taker downers and all of the groups and stall holders.

“I have had so much support from friends and a lot of other people have helped us put it in this year volunteers.

“It went very very well in a nutshell. It was a super sunny and warm day.”

James added that he has lots of big plans for next year’s Sherston Boules event, which will be its 30th anniversary and also the 1000th anniversary of the formation of Sherston.

He said: “We are looking forward to a great milestone event.”
