GP PRACTICES across Wiltshire have been recognised for their work supporting unpaid carers The third annual ‘Investors in Carers’ awards earlier this month celebrated the success of the GP Accreditation Scheme delivered by Carer Support Wiltshire which supports carers across the county.

The event featured a short talk from Alana Brokenshire, 19, from Chippenham, who looks after her teenage brother who has Asperger’s and her mother who has a physical disability.

Alana said: “My life has been greatly improved by the support I have received from the young adult carer project at Carer Support Wiltshire.

“I have been a part of the steering group to have a say in what events and activities are organised for younger carers in Wiltshire. I have also taken part in an accredited First Aid course, had help to apply for a nursery apprenticeship and enjoyed some fun breaks with the friends I have made.”

GP practices who received awards on the night included Malmesbury Primary Care Centre who achieved Gold Plus.

Dawn Ashberry, a receptionist at the Centre, said: “There are several of us who form the carers team at Malmesbury Primary Care Centre but credit for the hard work, dedication, passion and commitment must go to Julie Frayling who is the carers lead.

“Julie has led our work supporting carers for many years and this award is testament to all her efforts.”

Other winners included New Court Surgery who achieved Gold, their first award since the scheme started and Hathaway Medical Centre who achieved Gold Plus.
