A seven-vehicle crash on the M5 near Stroud yesterday afternoon has left 16 people injured, two of them seriously.

It involved five cars and two HGVs between junction 13 and 14, near Michaelwood services.

A 23-year-old Coventry man who was driving one of the cars was taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol with serious head injuries and is currently in a critical condition.

A 19-year-old woman who was a passenger in the same car was also taken to Southmead Hospital with pelvic injuries and remains in a serious condition.

Police want to speak to any witnesses who have not yet contacted them, including at least one person who was stood on the nearby footbridge and witnessed the entire incident.

The carriageway was closed until 9.20pm while a collision investigation was carried out, casualties treated and vehicles recovered.

Police remain at the scene but two lanes have now reopened.
