TWO men have been charged with burglary after two convenience stores in Stroud were broken into late on Monday night.

Police were called after reports of successive break-ins at Acre Street Stores and then Hill Stores at around 3.30pm.

Officers began a search after two men wearing hoodies were allegedly seen using a rock to smash a window of the Spar shop in Acre Street.

Around five minutes later police received reports of another break-in at the shop in Bisley Old Road, where eight bottles of spirits and 10 packets of cigarettes were stolen.

Police arrested two men around half an hour later.

Matthew Roger Pate, 28, from Farrier's Croft in Bussage has been charged with attempted burglary and burglary.

Michael Howard Anthony Phillips, 26, from Gloucester has been charged with the same offences.

The two men will appear before Cheltenham Magistrates on Wednesday September 2.
