THOUSANDS of brave competitors used camaraderie and team spirit to get themselves around an endurance course in Cirencester Park at the weekend.

Dubbed “probably the toughest event on the planet,” Tough Mudder South West 2015 returned to Cirencester for the second year running and saw determined adult competitors take on 11 mile obstacle course designed to test physical strength and mental grit.

Entrants had to take on exhilarating new obstacles in this year’s version , including “Dead Ringer,” a traverse across a series of inclined pegs using handheld rings and “Cry Baby,” a tunnel crawl through a tear-gas-like substance.

One of the most remarkable stories to come out of this year’s event was Rob Cam completing the course in his chin-operated wheelchair, the first ever tetraplegic to complete a Tough Mudder course.

Vice president of Tough Mudder, John Fidoe, said: “Tough Mudder is a challenge that is adaptable and fulfilling to people of all backgrounds and abilities – and we are constantly inspired by our participants that overcome their own mental and physical barriers while preparing for and taking on our events.

“As we do with all special needs participants, we worked closely with our health and safety team to accommodate Rob’s team needs to get around course safely, while ensuring they still enjoy the core elements of a Tough Mudder experience.”

Among those taking part was X Factor 2014 finalist Jay James, who took part on Saturday to raise money for Help for Heroes.

Children were also able to participate in the action through Fruit Shoot Mini Mudder, a mini version of Tough Mudder, which is a mile long, and made up of four un-timed laps.
