A CHINESE restaurant in Stroud is pioneering a new all you can eat buffet and special lunch menu.

China Palace in Russell Street came under new management in May and has since undergone a makeover under the experienced leadership of owners Sally and Peter Shum.

Blending traditional cooking with head chef Peter’s Hong Kong style cuisine, the large menu offers a huge range of meals, all fresh and cooked to order.

Growing up in China and having worked in restaurants across Gloucestershire for more than 30 years, Peter and his team of chefs have created modern menu that blends traditional Chinese cuisine with speciality dishes - such as Ho Fun Rice noodles and Hong Kong style casserole hot pot.

The couple own Manor Chinese Takeaway in Bussage, but this is their first full restaurant venture.

Keen to try the new place, the SNJ team was kindly invited for a meal on Friday night.

Inside and out, the building has been transformed, with a cool, modern decor and relaxed atmosphere.

Stroud News and Journal:

The new bar offers a big drinks menu, with a good selection of wines and beers, from which I chose an Asahi.

As Chinese is my favourite cuisine I had high expectations. Fortunately I wasn’t disappointed!

Settling down at a big table we shared starters of steamed char sui roast pork buns, steamed king prawn and steamed pork dumplings, all of which were excellent.

The food came quickly, but you could tell it had been freshly cooked.

For my main I chose sizzling king prawn in black bean sauce which was cooked to perfection, and cost a reasonable £6.50.

Other colleagues chose meals such as roast duck with pineapple and pickled ginger, lemon chicken and Singapore chow mein, which all looked just as appetising as mine.

Overall it was a great meal and night out, with a relaxed atmosphere and great food.

Stroud has been lacking a good Chinese restaurant and this place fits the bill perfectly. I definitely recommend a visit.

I’m certainly going to be back to try the all you can eat buffet soon!

China Palace is open from 12pm-2.30pm and 5.30pm – 11pm from Monday to Saturday.
