HARD-WORKING horticulturalists were rewarded for the commitment to their gardens last week at the annual Malmesbury in Bloom prize-giving, held at the town hall.

A children’s painting competition was also held to coincide with the gardening theme, with the town’s budding artists being recognised for their work.

Mary Smith, an artist from Malmesbury, was one of the judges of the painting competition. She was impressed by this year’s standard.

“They all did a fantastic job,” she said.

“It is a lovely event to hold for them as they’ll always remember getting their certificates.”

The gardening awards ceremony followed the children’s prize-giving and this year’s judge, Lisa Gore, showed a slideshow of all of the gardens that were entered and gave feedback to each entrant.

There were winners for a variety of categories including hanging baskets, hotel or commercial premises, wild flower areas and courtyard gardens, among others.

The overall winners were Hyams Autos, based in the town centre.

Town Councillors Sue Poole and Catherine Doody were responsible for putting the event together with the help of other members of the town council.

Cllr Poole thanked everyone who entered for their commitment and effort.

“We really enjoyed going round everyone’s gardens,” she said.

“The residents were brilliant; it is just amazing the effort some people put in.

“It puts my gardening to shame.”

John Gundry, Malmesbury Town Mayor, gave out the award-winners in both competitions.

“It really brightens the town up,” he said of the gardening competition.

“Congratulations to councillors Poole and Doody for organising the event so expertly again.

“It was a great communal effort from the town council.”
