AS the temperatures drop off and Christmas looms, Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service is urging people to make sure their chimneys are prepared before lighting the first fires of the winter.

They are warning of the risks open fires can have and are encouraging people to have their fires swept by a registered chimney sweep.

Open fires are a warm, welcoming addition to the home but they do carry risks. People with open fires are being reminded that they should always use a fire guard to protect against flying sparks from hot embers and to make sure that embers are properly put out before leaving the property or going to bed.

Home safety manager Neil Chamberlain said: “Most chimney fires can be prevented by ensuring that the chimney or flue is clear of debris.

“To keep you and your family safe from fire, you should make sure that your chimney is swept regularly.

“Every year, we have to deal with dozens of chimney fires across Wiltshire and Swindon, and many of them could be easily avoided.

“Blocked or defective chimney flues also carry the risk of leading to carbon monoxide poisoning, so it’s vital that you employ a professional and qualified chimney sweep to ensure that your home is safe.”

As well as getting chimneys swept, people are also being encouraged to fit smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in their homes.

“Smoke alarms are inexpensive and can be bought in DIY stores and at many supermarkets,” continued Mr Chamberlain.

“Statistics have proved that you’re four times more likely to survive a fire if you have a working smoke alarm.

“In addition, it’s entirely possible to be exposed to carbon monoxide fumes without being aware of it, so having such an alarm will alert you to the danger before it’s too late.”
