FAMILIES and friends are invited to show off their moves when 200 community dancers take to the floor at the Fanzone in Gloucester Docks on Saturday, October 10.

One of three free attractions on Saturday as part of the cultural programme presented by Marketing Gloucester, the Rugby Flashmob is a unique opportunity to see one of the world’s top dance companies, Avant Garde Dance, in a special routine at the Fanzone at Gloucester Docks.

From 1.15pm, Avant Garde Dance will lead a spectacular dance event featuring a 200-strong cast of all ages and abilities which promises to be lots of fun for everyone taking part and watching.

To practice it yourself, check out the simple and fun routine by typing in ‘Gloucester Our Big Year 2015: Rugby Flashmob’ on youtube. Then simply join in from the sidelines on the day.

The Rugby Flashmob is presented by Marketing Gloucester in partnership with Strike A Light Festival, Barnwood Park High School for Girls, Ribstone Hall High School, Gdance and the University Of Gloucestershire.

Strike A Light Festival’s Emma-Jane Benning said: “Avant Garde Dance have been described by the New York Times as ‘musically exhilarating’ so we’re absolutely thrilled they are taking part in the cultural programme in support of the rugby celebrations.

“We’re delighted that Gloucester music producer Malaki Patterson has created an original music score to accompany the piece.

“Thousands of people have already attended the cultural programme so far and I’m sure Avant Garde Dance will attract another good turnout for what promises to be a great fun event for all the family.”

Gloucester City Council leader Paul James said: “The cultural programme is proving really popular and it shows there is a real appetite for these kinds of events.

“Following the success of the History Festival, it is another great example of showing how much our city has to offer.”

Also taking place on Saturday is the high-energy Show and Prove, a free unticketed event from 2pm in King’s Square featuring a series of dance battles hosted by Tony Adigun and featuring Avant Garde Dance and MSB dancers.

There are only a limited number of tickets left on the door for Georgian choir Ensemble Rustavi’s free performance at Gloucester Cathedral starting at 6pm on Saturday. The tickets will be available on a first-come-first-served basis on the night.

On Sunday, Haka Day Out performed by Corey Baker Dance Company is free to attend at King Square at 1pm and Gloucester Docks at 4pm and 7pm.
