THE M5 southbound is closed after a fatal crash this morning.

One person has died in the accident between a car and a lorry which happened just after 5.30am.

The southbound carriageway has been closed between junction 12 for Gloucester and junction 13 for Stroud.

Highways England has put diversions in place but roads are clogging up and people can expect delays.

Southbound traffic travelling to the South West is advised to exit the M5 at J11A and join the A417 towards Swindon. Then join the M4 westbound to re-join the M5 southbound at J15.

BBC Radio Gloucestershire is reporting from the scene.

A local diversion is also available for southbound traffic which may exit at J12 and follow the solid black circle symbol on local road signs via the B4008 towards Quedgeley to join the A38 southbound through Moreton Valence and then take the A419 to re-join the M5 southbound at J13.

According to BBC Radio Gloucestershire the B4008 from Stonehouse to Gloucester is blocked.

The A38 is backed up between Quedgeley and Whitminster.

All routes around junction 12 are experiencing heavy traffic.

Gloucester Services Southbound traffic is queuing.

Police have said the road will be closed until noon.

SNJ reporter Saul Cooke-Black is heading to the scene.
