A 21-year-old Scotsman has admitted an offence of affray in which a man was seriously injured in Cirencester more than 18 months ago.

Stuart Young of Dunbae Road, Stranraer, Wigtownshire, was to have stood trial at Gloucester Crown Court yesterday on charges of affray in Cricklade Street, Cirencester, on April 18 last year and causing grievous bodily harm to Liam Hoey.

A jury was ready to be sworn in when Young change his plea to guilty to the affray charge and the prosecution said it would not proceed with the wounding offence.

Prosecutor Anjali Gohil said Young's plea encapsulated not just the disorder involved in the affray charge but also the injury to Mr Hoey.

She told the court the incident was captured on CCTV and a 10 minute video would be shown to the court when Young is sentenced.

It would be necessary for the court to view it several times and in slow motion and the defendant and victim would both be highlighted in it, she said.

Owen James, defending, asked for a social enquiry report to be prepared on Young by the Scottish equivalent of the probation service in Stranraer. Judge Euan Ambrose agreed.

He bailed Young until December 15 for sentence.
